Types of Muzzles
At Big Snoof, we believe we’re better when we’re in community. We also believe that not every type of muzzle will work for every situation! That’s why we’ve joined together with other muzzle makers around the world to bring you the best of the best!
Many people are surprised to hear that there are an exorbitant amount of types of muzzles. Unfortunately, the ones accessible in stores are the cheapest and most ill-fitting of all muzzles. Additionally, the "quick results" found with a quick Google or Amazon search will yield results that fail to consider the realities of muzzling and whether the needs of a dog are actually met with those muzzles. From inaccurate sizing to muzzles that claim to be "bite proof" despite quite a bit of evidence to show they are not bite proof, the internet is a confusing place for people looking for answers. We hope to spread some knowledge about not only our own muzzles , but also others available worldwide.
If you’re interested in other types of muzzles, we’ve compiled a list of muzzles that we would (and some we would not) recommend.
Things to look for in a well-fit muzzle:
Nose length has approximately .25” between the tip of your dog’s nose and the front inside material of the basket, as well as about .25”-.5” between the muzzle and your dog’s eyes.
Your dog’s face is not squished tightly. This is especially important for muzzles that rest around the cheeks. If straps are adjusted too tight, you may simply need to loosen them to prevent squishing. Some muzzle baskets (such as Big Snoof muzzles) can be widened in the cheeks, either with force or for plastic muzzles, by boiling and stretching them.
Plenty of room to allow your pup to fully and comfortably pant, without causing their jaw to “bottom out” by touching the bottom of the muzzle. The goal is a muzzle that does not at all restrict your pup from regulating their body temperature through panting. (Remember, they don’t sweat like we do!)
The muzzle isn’t excessively wide and wobbly. Some wobbliness is absolutely normal, but it shouldn’t be so big that it’s extremely unsecure.
